Active since 2024

Rajesh Barman (b. 1995), an artist from the rural landscape of North Bengal, draws much of his inspiration from the environment where he grew up and received his early education. Having moved to Kolkata and Shantiniketan for higher studies, his art has evolved to reflect the complex relationship between his rural beginnings and the urban life he now navigates. This transition has deeply influenced his artistic exploration.

Barman is primarily intrigued by the transient nature of existence, and much of his work is inspired by his immediate surroundings, focusing on the vulnerable human condition.

In his recent works, he attempts to portray his personal journey from Cooch Behar to Kolkata, and later to Shantiniketan for long-term studies. The narrative continues with his return to home after completing his studies, re-experiencing the intimate relationships within his family and domestic space, while romanticizing the Torsha River in his native city. The artwork also reflects his efforts to hold onto the memories of Kolkata and Shantiniketan, capturing intangible feelings that have settled within him over time in a scattered yet significant manner. His works primarily aim to capture the contrast between the place he left behind and the place he migrated to, emphasizing the distinctions between natural and industrial spaces.

Currently, he creates his work by overlapping digital images and manipulating them in various ways. For this, he has chosen his mobile phone as the primary tool, believing that the digital medium offers the best means of expressing his intentions and the emotions he seeks to convey.
